Solar Energy For Homes

According to a recent survey by a US solar company Applied Materials, Americans want to see more solar energy and more renewable power used in nationwide energy supplies.

The telephone survey consisted of a sample of 1,000 adults made up of 200 in each of the following states:  California, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Texas.

Some of the major findings discovered by the survey:

• 81% agree that solar energy should play a bigger role in meeting U.S. energy needs in the next five years.
• 68% say that energy utilities should include solar electricity as a part of their power generation.
• 50% believe the U.S. Government’s goal of 25% renewable energy by 2025 is too slow.
• 52% would be willing to pay more for electricity if their power company increased its use of renewable energy.
• 41% would not be willing to pay more.

One shocking finding of the survey was that Americans have absolutely no idea how much solar energy is currently being harnessed in the USA.  20% of the people surveyed believed that 20% or more of the electricity in the nation comes from solar power, even though it’s actually < 0.01% (2000 times less).  Yeouch, apparently the public really needs to be educated.

Another misconception was that the US is the world leader in solar power implementations, when in fact they’re not even close – Germany and Spain are the leaders.

On a positive note, it’s very refreshing to see that most people have a great deal of enthusiasm for solar power and renewable energy.  Now it’s just up for corporations and the government to help bring the supply close to the level of demand.
